Why a Crush is called a Crush

It’s like a
Crushing defeat when
You feel the air knocked out of you
Not from physical impact,
But from emotions that hit you harder than any
Punch can deal.

Its almost like deflated balloons
Left unused and discarded
in the corner of their room,
Barely hanging on by the few molecules of Helium
To keep them mere inches off of the ground.
In this same way I mope
In self pity do I drown,
Uninviting myself to parties I’d planned
Feeling more disheartened than the balloons who never made it through the week.

Like soda cans pressed
and Compressed,
I feel trapped
and squished-
Wanting to tell you everything I’m thinking of as we stand together
On the corner of the street
with nothing separating us but Silence.
But of course, we remain status quo as I keep my peace.
I guess in this way,
I’m crushed,
I guess in this way,
I’m also the crusher.
