The City I Loved You In, The City I Lost You In

The crisp air with
The smell of gasoline-
The taste of adventure and dreams,
That’s the place where I
Figured out,
It’s just a feeling.

The silence so thick
As we took deep breaths and turned away,
Taking paths that would never intersect again.

This is where you chose fate
And I chose destiny-
With the precious finality of “last moments” hanging between us,
We were blessed,
Or rather-
Cursed-
With the chance at sending each other off with
More than just a stare,
A chance that neither of us took
As we dropped the gaze and left,
Heel, toe
Heel,
Toe.

The maroon maples and their mellow melancholy
Make me cry in a way that a mother does
When she loses her child,
With the heartbreak of decades crammed
Into one final cry.

The city I met you in,
The city I loved you in-
Incidentally became
The city I lost you in.
