Why I Like You, And Why I’m Trying Not To

This is an open heart
With me wearing my letter on my sleeve.
I like you because
You always know what to say
Even when you think you don’t.
I like you because
Of your sense of justice
And the way that your silence
Brings me back to equilibrium.
I like you because
I guess I thought you were cooler
Than you actually are-
Kinder
Than you actually are-
And I guess because
I thought you were everything that
I thought I needed.
I kind of thought
More of you than
What you really were,
I guess.
And even when you tell me that the pages are numbered wrong
I’ll still keep writing paragraph after paragraph
Analyzing you and me.

I’ve been guilty of this once. I won’t make that mistake again.
