Remembering to Forget

The way the sunlight hits your eyes
Reminds me of the same way that words
Travel through the air.
It’s a lot like falling in love,
But a thousand times worse.

The way I felt when you
Were always with me
Can’t really be compared to anything
Because I have long since forgotten
The scent of the coffees we used to share.

I would rather forget to remember you
Than keep you pressed between the sheets of my diary
Because God knows-
I’ve written dirt and lies and blood
In those pages.
Keep me like the promises you break
And miss me like the taste of the first kiss
You never had.
