Do Not Go Gentle (Into That Good Night)

The young should keep
Their hearts at bay
If only to stay breathing
For just a little longer.

And keep the roses on their palms
Like incantations gone wrong, like
Damp firecrackers and
Missing teeth
In a one-shot miracle at staying alive.

For there is nothing greater than love
Except for the pain that follows it
And nothing softer than life
Except for the feet that trample it.

One day
The dead and living switch places
To rise up again and fall like
Phoenixes half dead, half alive
And yet the only thing keeping the two together
Will be me
