That Night Thee Years Ago

Why California hurts is all in
The early Spring air, at
53°F
At 6 in the evening, falling dusk
Falling headlong into
You.

Every night in
January to July would from then on
Remind me of you, and the
Subtle glances we traded like playing cards
And going through the motions
Of Getting Over It.

That one night three years ago
Three years ago when I had my first poem published about you,
Three years ago when you and I were different,
Three years ago when you and I were together
(but not really)
Is why my bones ache to leave this place,
This place tainted with
Your laugh,
Your smile,
Your eyes;
You.
